Hello, I tested the game with a Mega Everdrive X7 (worked fine on all my consoles), the Mega SD (it works fin on all my consoles when the setting "game load reset type" where set on SOFT, on HARD mode it leads to a black screen and it wont boot), with a rewritable cartridge (with FRAM it also write the game properly, also tried without FRAM/savegame), it only worked on my Sega Genesis model 1 and Analogue MegaSD.
I tested the Sega Genesis model 1, model 2, model 3, CDX, 32x, Nomad and Analogue MegaSD.
I notice that the Sega Genesis model 1 and Analogue MegaSD are the only ones who have no TMSS and that the only consoles that the game worked with a rewritable cartridge, all others fail to boot.
I think the issue is related to TMSS, is it a security feature maybe to prevent the game to work on a rewritable cartridge (aliexpress warning) and work only on flash carts, or maybe just a bug.
Massive respect for the soundtrack! Had to hook up my high-definition model 1 that i usually only use with high quality soundtracks ;) i get goosebumps on every track!
I had previously collected up to card 6 in 1.0. I updated to 1.1 and found my save was no longer available. I started playing through again from the start. This time I am experiencing bugs not found in 1.0.
The 1st is that the music stops. This happens randomly. It only resumes when a hit a boss fight, enter a check point, or restart the game. Sometimes I kinda feels like it's reached the end of the track, it's strange. Also when exiting the tank boss and returning (like walk right), the music resets to the stage audio and not the boss audio.
The 2nd issue is graphical anomalies appearing after accessing the inventory. They seem to be comprised of the last thing Interacted with. Like if I just entered a door, I'll see a door. If I just killed some dogs, I'll see the dog sprite. This goes away only if I restart the game. This again happens randomly, doesn't always occur, and I can't seem to cause it to happen on purpose (wish I had more info for you).
I am playing on the Analogue Pocket Genesis core v1.08.
After 1.1 update, I continue with same savefiles and after exiting items screen, some graphic glitch appears inside truck. In Tank Boss screen ocurrs some bugs as we can see in pic below. Music doesn't change again to boss track after unintentional return to previous screen
I'm using Mega Everdrive Pro on legit brazilian Mega Drive and I couldn't replicate graphic glitches in other console (japanese Mega Drive). But music problems happened again as described early.
otro glich grafico y desaparicion de puertas , al usrar binoculare. basicamente en cada lugar que eequipo los binoculares algun error genera, no se si tendra que ver con el everdrive, probarare en un cartucho regrabable
It's not working at all. When I try to open the folder, it says it cannot open it as an archive. And when I try to play it through the zip, it says the zip file does not contain a BIN, GEN, MD, SMD OR 32X file.
Sadly not. The game heavily relies on the proportional font writer and would you believe it?! As powerful as the NeoGeo is, this is something it really can't do :D
Fantastic port. Incredible work! Is the (AMAZING) Tara theme remix meant to loop? Because mine doesn't restart unless an alert has been triggered. But other than that very very small thing, i'd say this is flawless.
Great job with the port! But I may have found a bug or it might be something I did wrong, I'm currently unsure...
I built a reproduction cart for myself using a board from MouseByteLabs. I used a 2mb 27c160 for the ROM chip and programmed the last 512kb on the chip with a copy of the final 512kb of the ROM.
The bug I've encountered is that I can boot the game and play just fine, but if I turn the game off and try to turn it back on it will not boot. To fix this I need to insert an original cart, boot it up, and then try booting Metal Gear again and it will work.
Model 1 Genesis with a model 2 Sega CD attached if that's any help, and again great job on the port.
I'll finish playing Metal Gear, turn the system off. Later I'll go to turn it back on and it will not start Metal Gear.
To get Metal Gear to work again I need to turn the console off, insert and start an official game, turn it back off and then reinsert Metal Gear and it will work.
that trick didnt work for me, no matter what, I cant boot the game with a flashed cart, only early genesis 1 model, others fail to boot, including nomad
But what a great experience! I've always wanted to finish the first Metal Gear, but it was too cumbersome. It's crazy that the ever-reliable Mega Drive came along to do the job.
To put it bluntly, there are some things I should highlight that I hope will be patched.
1 - When using the binoculars, dead soldiers reappear on the map, but they're static and pose no problem.
2 - Since this is based on the original MSX game, switching between cards or gas masks inside contaminated rooms is very annoying, which ends up sapping life.
3 - The credits and who each character is are not translated into Spanish, and the original credits are in English.
4 - I tried it on different emulators like the original console; the only one that gave me problems was Kega Fusion with the sound effects.
5 - Since it's using the entire Amiga version's scripts, they skipped this part that should say, "Turn off the Mega Drive, over."
As a bonus, it would be nice to have a map, as it becomes quite cumbersome once you get a level 5 card or higher.
Aside from that, they did a spectacular job. I really enjoyed it. I'm sharing it with all my friends, and they say the same thing. I hope to be able to play MG2 in the future and see how much it's improved. Greetings, and eternally grateful. Greetings from Argentina, land of Mate, Big Boss's favorite drink.
Incredible to play this game in a Megadrive/Genesis, I love it!
I test with the Mega Everdrive PRO and works perfect. I tried to create a cart for collect this game but not works on my Nomad :/. Use the soniccd123 boards with FRAM
Another thing, the rom has replicated the header two times
Moreover, I have observed that the name of the game, code, controllers and some other things in the header are not filled. But it's true that it doesn't influence the running of the game.
Been trying all afternoon to track this bastard bug down. Doesn't happen in emulation, only on my real MD! We will get there otherwise you'll never see the ending!!!
How did you print the case insert and sticker? What printer and paper types? I’ve looked into making my own custom labels for games, but haven’t found a setup I liked yet.
As my first walkthrough ever I suffered a lot but I liked (first time playing 2D MG games).
I did a livestream and a full gameplay for my channel. Also I got the "binocular" bug and a bug where the game freezes at the end of the game, after you climb the left one of three ladders.
I'm using a japanese Mega Drive 1 + MD V3 Pro Everdrive Cartridge.
it's not. This is only a reality because of the amazing work of Manuel pazos who disassembled and fully commented the original 128kb game. Solid snake is 512kb!!!
From what I've played, this port is great, but I was wondering, does the "Ending" song replace "Return of the Foxhounder"? All the remixes sound amazing, and that was one of the songs I was looking forward to the most, when I was checking out the Sound Test.
The original ending just has the credits in the radio screen. I didnt feel that was enough of a pay off for conpleting it so added an entirely new end credits sequence and soundtrack. It did meam making a new tune for it though.
Go to the screen where you have to wait for the guards to retrieve. Go right to the screen with the three trucks. Hide on the left side of the left truck till guards come out of the middel and right truck. Wait.
I managed to get seen by the guard that came from the right truck when he was walking back. Couldn't replicate :/ maybe a certain spot?
I love this port. As a fan of the series, it's a dream to have it for the Sega Genesis. Thank you for the great effort. So, I'm really sorry to ask you about this, but is it possible to have a version without portraits or voices that feels more like the MSX version? I know I have no right to ask for anything, but I liked the port so much because it was so well done that I would like it to be a 1:1 version of the MSX version.
Thanks for answering me, it really is a great job and I am very grateful, the more I have played it the more I am liking this port, I will tell a friend who makes repros to have this great game in physical format, big greetings from Santiago de Chile (sorry if my English is not very good since I use Google Translate XD)
I've explained elsewhere, but the proportional text writer is dam near impossible on a NeoGeo sadly. Anyway.. I've got other more interesting plans for the NG ;)

The music can suddenly die as seen here:

Might have been due to the Genesis Plus core for RA

This is amazing.
Awesome work! Question what is the DIZ file for?
When you upload it to a bbs, this file is picked up and displayed on the file list.
*inhale*
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
This makes me really happy.
Hi again!

Can't wait to get off of work, and play this on my Genesis emulator. The OG Metal Gear is my favorite. 👍🏻
It's not working at all. When I try to open the folder, it says it cannot open it as an archive. And when I try to play it through the zip, it says the zip file does not contain a BIN, GEN, MD, SMD OR 32X file.
Unzip it first? There is a .md file inside
worth a shot lol, nice work on the mega drive port, will give it a play through when i get the time
Very nice, thank you! Any chance of a neo mvs/aes/cd ports? Could test on neo sd pro mvs & aes carts
Sadly not. The game heavily relies on the proportional font writer and would you believe it?! As powerful as the NeoGeo is, this is something it really can't do :D
Fantastic!
Would love to play this on Neo Geo.

How you boot an original cart then the metal gear and it works? you must turn off/on the console to remove/insert a cartridge... I cant get it
That's what I mean.
I'll finish playing Metal Gear, turn the system off. Later I'll go to turn it back on and it will not start Metal Gear.
To get Metal Gear to work again I need to turn the console off, insert and start an official game, turn it back off and then reinsert Metal Gear and it will work.
Got it, it does not work on my sega nomad, I will try your method, thank you

noticed the dual header today while debugging but it's not an issue
Moreover, I have observed that the name of the game, code, controllers and some other things in the header are not filled. But it's true that it doesn't influence the running of the game.
very good
Does anyone know has anyone confirmed if or how to get this to run on a MegaSD?
Have you tried? MegaSD manual says it should just work as its a standard non-byte swapped rom.
It works fine on my MegaSD.
I got the ladder crash bug at the end but everything else was great.
I never gave this game a shot until the port. Now I think I'll play it over and over again.
Thanks a lot.
Been trying all afternoon to track this bastard bug down. Doesn't happen in emulation, only on my real MD! We will get there otherwise you'll never see the ending!!!
Fixed in v1.1
Thanks! I just tried it and it works great. I enjoyed the ending.
I like your port so much I made myself a cart.
can you make about 5 more? 😅
How did you print the case insert and sticker? What printer and paper types? I’ve looked into making my own custom labels for games, but haven’t found a setup I liked yet.
can you share the labels so I can print mine?
it works if you set "game load reset type" where set on SOFT
Amazing work on this port!
As my first walkthrough ever I suffered a lot but I liked (first time playing 2D MG games).

Dam it, I thought I fix the ladder crash. Will investigate.
Fixed in v1.1
I nearly thought that old_pirate made this port until I scrolled down more!
Kudos to you for porting this game to the Amiga and Genesis!!
No longer stuck on the MSX and NES!!
It's unbelievable! Big thanks for such fantastic port!
This of course begs the question, is Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake in the cards next?
It always baffled me that these games never got a "Super" release on any 16-bit consoles back in the day, but I'll gladly take them now
it's not. This is only a reality because of the amazing work of Manuel pazos who disassembled and fully commented the original 128kb game. Solid snake is 512kb!!!
I appreciate your upfront honesty. What if there was some team effort/collaboration with a patreon stretch goal backing it?
Way too much pressure then. These games are really a byproduct of my curiosity.
WoW!! Amazing!! Any plans to release source code for educational purposes? Great work!!
I meant to release the amiga one ages ago, guess id better do that.
From what I've played, this port is great, but I was wondering, does the "Ending" song replace "Return of the Foxhounder"? All the remixes sound amazing, and that was one of the songs I was looking forward to the most, when I was checking out the Sound Test.

That does make sense, the radio ending was bland. Despite what I said before, I did enjoy the new ending theme. It reminds me of "The Terminator".
Hi!
Maybe a bug but i have an unusual setup:
If i safe the game and load it i start at the first screen without any items (except the cigs you have at the beginning).
I am using an original Mega Everdrive x5 on a boutique Genesis 3 (called MDLite)... Not a clone!
Will try it later on a High Definition PAL Model.
Have a nice day
Edit: my fault! You need to pass checkpoints to save! NOT A BUG!
😉
Hi!
Maybe a bug:
Go to the screen where you have to wait for the guards to retrieve. Go right to the screen with the three trucks. Hide on the left side of the left truck till guards come out of the middel and right truck. Wait.
I managed to get seen by the guard that came from the right truck when he was walking back. Couldn't replicate :/ maybe a certain spot?
Thanks for this great port!
Awesome work! Congrats!
Please make The 2
I love this port. As a fan of the series, it's a dream to have it for the Sega Genesis. Thank you for the great effort. That is the most polite request ive ever had. Sadly it would be too much work to reverse those changes now and I'm very much done with the project.
Thanks for answering me, it really is a great job and I am very grateful, the more I have played it the more I am liking this port, I will tell a friend who makes repros to have this great game in physical format, big greetings from Santiago de Chile (sorry if my English is not very good since I use Google Translate XD)
Thank you for your hard work, amazing job!
Thank you! Great addition to Genesis/MD collection.
I found a bug...when use scope after kill an enemy, the sprite appears again in same place.
Ohhhh... ok. Will investigate
Fixed in v1.1
Thanks, man! 👌
<3
This is absolutely amazing! This is a must play for any Metal Gear fan!
That is awesome, great work!
Neogeo & NeogeoCD port please!!!
I've explained elsewhere, but the proportional text writer is dam near impossible on a NeoGeo sadly. Anyway.. I've got other more interesting plans for the NG ;)
Thanks ! i hope those plans involve guns and some cowboys :D (fingers crossed) :)
